The Drug Safe Community organisation has launched a project to create the nation’s first drug safe industrial community at Smithfield-Wetherill Park, the largest industrial estate in the Southern Hemisphere.
At a breakfast hosted by the Cumberland Business Chamber, DSC founder Michael White explained the need for the initiative.
“We are changing lives and improving work place safety”, said Michael, “We have already helped companies in Sydney’s West reduce the level of drug use in their staff from 15% to 1%.”
“One reason why we want to establish this community is because 70% of drug users are employed and an increasing number are coming to industrial areas looking for work
Michael introduced Dr Tharid Ali, a local resident, who has migrated from general practice and a managerial role
The Drug Safe Community was launched by Michael 20 years ago after he lost his close friend and business partner to a heroin overdose. The two had worked together for 13 years and he had never known of his colleague’s addiction. He lost a friend, a business partner and his business when discovered that $380,000 had been taken from it through false invoicing to pay for the addiction.
“Drug use in the work force is something I am passionate about talking about to the business world. You can lose everything if it is left undetected.”
