In what was a legal “first” a crane designer was fined $16,000 due to his involvement in a crane accident at Karara in WA. The designer modified the boom of an 80 tonne crane used in a mine site. His work included reducing the thickness and weight of the boom support plates. When the crane underwent tests the boom folded in half. The court was told that the modification rendered the crane unsafe to insufficient capacity as per the manufacturer’s specification of 80 tonnes.
